About Us

Bittersweet Kennel - Newfields, NH - Owners Lori & Doug Ferguson

Owners Lori & Doug Fergusson

Established in 1972, we are the oldest family-owned pet kennel in the Seacoast area and the largest in the state of New Hampshire. This means that your last-minute plans are no problem for our skilled staff. Despite our large size, we still offer an intimate setting on 10 beautiful acres in the heart of Rockingham County. Our team has been together longer than a decade and includes experienced kennel technicians, front desk personnel, and pet groomers.
We feature an all-indoor facility for your pets’ safety and security so that we can keep your pet healthy and happy regardless of the weather. During the winter, radiant heating keeps pets warm, and we have several large exhaust fans to ensure a continuous airflow. In the summer, large fans help keep your pets cool, and large windows line the building to provide natural light. Playtime in large, outdoor fenced areas ensures pets get exercise.
Owner Lori Ferguson has dedicated herself to pet care for more than 40 years, raising and showing various dog breeds from 4H to the Westminster Dog Club. She and her staff are dedicated to ensuring that your pet enjoys a great vacation while you are away.

Your Pet Resort

We like to say that we are an all-inclusive pet resort, which means that we will be providing everything that your pet needs during their stay, except for medications. However, we are more than happy to administer any medications that you provide, including insulin. Low-cost “doggie day care” can be pre-scheduled or you can walk-in. We offer grooming six days a week, and appointments are recommended for grooming service, though same-day service may be accommodated for some pets.

We have kept our dogs at Bittersweet several times each year for the past 15+ years, and three of our four beagles have seemed to enjoy going there, wagging their tails on the way in (the other one just hates to leave home!). They always are very healthy when we pick them up. The staff is friendly and the dogs like them and go to them when we enter the kennel.

We also have taken our cats there from time to time, but you know cats, it is difficult to tell how they feel about it! One cat has medical issues, and she has always been well-cared-for.

I had my cat groomed here a few weeks ago and they did an amazing job! They were courteous, friendly, and not too expensive. I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a great groomer for cats.

We have been taking our dogs to Lori and Bittersweet Kennel for close to 30 years. She has taken good care of my last 4 pups over these many years and despite the fact that my wife and I don't relish leaving our dogs at kennel, we've never hesitated leaving them in the care of Lori and her team. They are animal people, loving and caring and want nothing but good things for their charges. We HIGHLY recommend Bittersweet.

I have brought our English Bulldog Maggie to Bittersweet for years. She has always been taken care of in the best ways possible. True, she does smell like a "dog" when we pick her up, but hey ~ I am sure she played hard and had a good time 🙂 I am always confident and at peace when I leave her in their care for several days. Which is a great feeling!
